INTEGRITY MATTERS 'SELF-REFLECTION TOOL'

“Snowfish turned a fairly dense competency framework into an online tool that leaders wanted to engage with.

The step-by-step self-reflection, combined with a peer-benchmark, gave people an honest personal starting point for thinking about ongoing professional development needs.

Having Jason present at the retreats to talk through the benefits of this reflective approach made a real difference too, showing how insights from the online work enabled the conversations we had in person.”

Making ethics real

Senior leaders need support too. We helped Integrity Matters turn its competency framework for senior ethics and compliance professionals into a personalised self-evaluation tool, giving participants a powerful starting point for self-reflection, peer discussion and ongoing professional development.

Supporting the leaders who make ethics real

Ethics and compliance professionals are responsible for helping organisations turn values, policies and commitments into everyday decisions and behaviour.

Doing that well demands far more than technical knowledge. These professionals need strategic vision, sound judgement, personal resilience and the ability to influence, collaborate, build relationships and challenge constructively, often while navigating complex organisational pressures.

Integrity Matters is a business ethics consultancy founded and led by Anny Tubbs, a former Chief Business Integrity Officer at Unilever with over 25 years’ experience as a lawyer and senior business leader.

Working with experienced ethics and compliance professionals, Integrity Matters developed a competency framework to explore the capabilities behind success in these demanding roles. Snowfish contributed to the framework’s development alongside Anny and fellow founder Paula Davis, helping organise the competencies into three areas: Vision and Values, Interacting with Others, and Inner Strengths.

The challenge was to turn that framework into something personally meaningful.

Turning the framework into self-reflection

Integrity Matters asked Snowfish to create an online tool that would allow senior ethics and compliance professionals to reflect on their own confidence across the framework, recognise potential strengths and identify opportunities for further development.

This could not feel like a conventional test. There were no universally correct answers, and the purpose was not to judge or certify experienced professionals. The tool needed to encourage honest reflection while treating both the subject and its audience with appropriate maturity.

Snowfish designed and built an interactive self-evaluation experience that guides participants through the competencies using carefully framed reflective questions.

On completing the evaluation, each participant receives a personalised spider chart. Their own confidence profile is plotted against an anonymised peer profile, based on the average responses of everyone else who has completed the tool.

The comparison does not tell participants whether they are “good” or “bad” at their role. Instead, it helps them see where their confidence appears stronger or weaker, where their experience differs from that of their peers and which areas they may want to explore further.

It turns an extensive competency framework into something immediately personal, visual and useful.

Connecting personal reflection with peer discussion

The tool was designed as part of a wider professional-development experience, not as a standalone piece of online learning.

Participants completed the self-evaluation in preparation for Integrity Matters’ Make Ethics Real retreats. These brought groups of senior ethics and compliance professionals together to explore the challenges and opportunities of business ethics with their peers in a safe and welcoming environment.

The personalised profiles gave participants a valuable starting point for those conversations. Rather than arriving with only a general sense of what they wanted to discuss, they could draw upon a structured reflection of their own confidence, development priorities and relationship to the wider peer group.

The competency framework also gave everyone a shared language for discussing aspects of the role that can otherwise be difficult to articulate.

Snowfish supported the connection between the digital and human experiences by attending and presenting at several retreats. This allowed us to see how participants responded to their profiles and how the insights generated online could prompt richer reflection and discussion in the room.

Creating space for continuing development

The value of the self-evaluation tool lies not simply in the technology or its visual output. It lies in what those things enable.

The experience gives accomplished ethics and compliance professionals permission to pause, take stock and look at their own practice from a fresh perspective. The peer comparison adds context without turning reflection into competition, while the retreats provide the trusted human environment needed to explore what the results might mean.

Together, the competency framework, personalised self-evaluation and facilitated retreats create a thoughtful blended experience, helping ethics and compliance leaders reflect on their strengths, connect with their peers and identify where they want to grow next.
